LPC Distinguished Researcher

Name:

Michael Krohn

Institution:

Minnesota

What I will be working on:

As an LPC Distinguished Researcher, I will be working on developing and testing the front-end electronics readout chain for the HGCAL. This will involve upgrading firmware and software for the evolving hardware designs within the readout chain in the test stands that are located at Fermilab. I will also lead the test beam effort at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility to test new scintillator tiles and tileboard designs. On the physics analysis side, I will work on developing searches for new physics. Specifically, a search for a right-handed W boson and heavy neutrino in the new Run-3 data. I led the Run-2 version of this search, but plan to incorporate new techniques, such as machine learning and improved background modeling, to enhance signal extraction.

My role in CMS past and present:

I joined the CMS collaboration in 2012 and initially performed searches for boosted Higgs bosons decaying to b quarks, which led to me being the H(bb) trigger contact. I also worked on both Phase I and Phase II pixel upgrades: performing quality testing of forward pixel modules, conducting radiation tests of CMOS technology for pixel read out chips (ROC), and testing a prototype ROC designed by the Fermilab ASIC group. I am currently the convener of the HCAL DPG trigger group and the EXO Monte Carlo & Interpretations subgroup.
