LPC Distinguished Researcher

Name:

Daniel Diaz

Institution:

UCSD

What I will be working on:

As a 2024 LPC DR, I will engage in a research plan aimed at increasing the discovery reach of the CMS experiment at the LHC, by targeting searches for long-lived particles. While continuing analysis using the Run II B-parking dataset. I will also lead efforts to upgrade the CMS Level-1 (L1) trigger to be sensitive to long-lived decays. Phase II upgrades of the CMS trigger system provide unique opportunities to develop ultrafast machine learning algorithms to be deployed at L1. I intend to harness this new technology to enable new searches for long-lived particles. I will also be present at Fermilab for the duration of my tenure as LPC DR where I plan to be involved with the organization of some of the programs aimed at teaching new students and researchers about HEP analysis.

My role in CMS past and present:

I joined the CMS experiment as a graduate student of Florida State University in 2017. As a student, I led a novel search for long-lived particles (LLPs) produced in association with a Z boson, decaying within the CMS tracker region. In addition to the analysis, I resided in Geneva, Switzerland for the majority of my graduate experience, where I was a member of the HCAL operations and Phase I upgrade team. I am currently a postdoctoral scholar with the Duarte group at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). At UCSD, I continue to work on searches for LLPs and I also contribute to the CMS Level-1 trigger upgrade team.
